FacWorld Report - December 2000

FacWorld Report - December 2000
(Bumper Renewal Season Edition)

Hi and welcome back to the FacWorld Report - the e-magazine for FacWorld Profile Holders.

This is very much the busiest time of year for most of us and FacWorld aims to ease the administrative burden. In November we successfully launched Quote2Bind. With this, FacWorld puts the whole Fac Reinsurance purchasing process online. Now, with FacWorld, you can
submit risks
receive quotes or info requests from a GeneralCologne Re underwriter
accept quotes or request alternatives
bind online
(in accordance with varying global regulations, confirmation of this arrives in the traditional manner).
You now have a more interactive site, which welcomes you back each session and contains your Online Portfolio of all activity conducted on the site.

There are articles both on the site and in the Report that require Adobe Acrobat to view. If you do not have the software installed, it is quick and easy to download.

Now - on with the show. The renewal season edition is meant to reflect live issues that we think underwriters will bear in mind during the glut of submission activity. The first of these issues is Gun Litigation. Gun Litigation has slipped off the headlines recently but has not gone away. The article, composed by GeneralCologne Re's Claims department gives a summary of legal activity and their possible underwriting implications that is as pertinent now as when they were hitting the front pages of the press.

This year, Europe has suffered from an unprecedented amount of rainfall & flooding. There has been a good deal of research on the topic and the industry has been affected by a large amount of resultant claim activity. The below article gives an excellent overview of the situation and its' impact - it requires Adobe Acrobat to open.

Pollution remains a live issue in the Liability world. In this edition of the Report, we include three articles, two on developing issues and first, the pollution review of the year. This review is comprehensive and insightful - it requires Adobe Acrobat to open.

Mold is a developing arena in Pollution Litigation. This page runs through a decision made by a court in California for $ 18.5m and has a link to GeneralCologne Re's review of Toxic Tort.

The final pollution contribution to this report concentrates on recent interpretations of Pollution Exclusions by US State Courts. Their interpretations should resonate for all underwriters looking at accounts with US exposures. The page concentrates on a ruling in Indiana which expands interpretation of exclusions and has a link to GeneralCologne Re's review of proposals in Louisiana to redefine the applicability of exclusions.

Earthquakes remain one of nature's most fascinating phenomena. Turkey is one of Europe's most active regions as the Marmara Quake demonstrated in 1999. Below is a fascinating article which examines the activity in Turkey and compares it with activity elsewhere - it requires Adobe Acrobat to open.

We would like to bring attention to the Discussion Forum on the site. As yet, it is an underutilised area but offers the opportunity for lively debate on an infinite variety of issues. Recently we have had a question posted on the subject of "Monetising Large Claims". We encourage Profile holders to add their opinions on this topic.

Last but no means least, we are always keen to share thoughts on the Internet. This month's piece by Chris Henson discusses how the internet is not about commoditising your brand in an undifferentiated marketplace. As ever the thinking is stimulating.

From all of us at the FacWorld Report, have a great renewal and festive season - we hope the site is of assistance at this busy time.

Thanks
FacWorld
