FacWorld Report - September/October 2001
First Anniversary Edition
Welcome to the First Anniversary edition of the FacWorld Report!
The site has seen a lot of improvements since the FacWorld Report made its debut last year. Risks can be quoted and bound through the site, we've released a branch-wide view of submissions, and redesigned the look of the site with easier navigation. Most recently, daily insurance news updates, courtesy of NewsEdge, can be viewed either online or e-mailed directly to your In Box. (Click HERE for more info.) We've also added a Legal News section courtesy of LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene, and MacRae. Two of their articles are featured in this month's report.
We continue to receive positive feedback on the Report and hope you find it valuable. This issue we feature several of our recurring publications that touch on various underwriting subjects.
Most of these articles require Adobe Acrobat to view. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader, please click on the link below to download the reader.

First, from our very own FacWorld Legal Resource Page, courtesy of LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene, and MacRae, come these two overviews of E-commerce and the insurance industry. Each touches on issues like regulation, jurisdiction, and privacy, with the first focusing on the European Union and the second on the United States.
E-Commerce and Insurance: EU
E-Commerce and Insurance: USA
Our latest Facultative Matters explores two issues. First, eRisk and electronic data damage are issues of growing concern in the insurance industry and, contrary to popular belief, are not merely internet related problems. Also included is a good overview of Boiler and Machinery that discusses its history and coverages as well as how it works with other policies.

Given EPLI's rising "popularity" in the industry, our team of experts has been hard at work putting together several EPLI Updates. Each features articles on underwriting, marketing, and legal issues within the Employment Practices realm as well as interesting loss scenarios and facts that can be used as educational tools for insureds and agents.
EPLI Update
The next EPLI article surveys the skill sets necessary to effectively manage employment-related claims, the legal issues pertaining to the use of TPA's, and suggests some considerations for implementing an effective claim model, whether or not the insurer plans to use a TPA
EPLI: Claims and TPA
This last EPLI article discusses the Americans with Disabilities Act and Cruise Lines. For EPLI underwriters and claim professionals, this article is an interesting case study of how employers are exposed to discrimination under the ADA not only from their employees, but also from passengers (third parties) on cruise lines.

Ohio UM/UIM has been the longest four letter word in the insurance industry recently. Our Commercial Auto Underwriting Team has put together this useful piece that lays out many of the issues of Ohio UM/UIM including a timeline of events and citations of relevant court cases. This article is part of our Insurance Issues series.

As a follow up to last month's first installment of Power Review, this second edition of Power ReView includes articles on equivalent operating hours, "retired" boilers, and increasing power supplies with wind farms.
Power Review #2
On the "lighter" side, in honor of Steve Fossett's recent ballooning troubles, we offer this piece on hot air balloon losses. Sometimes, the ride isn't all that tranquil.
